Mom Hacks: How to Set a Confetti Cup Booby Trap

Mom Hacks: How to Set a Confetti Cup Booby Trap

I shared this simple confetti cup hack today on KSL's Studio 5. For those of you looking to dump some fun on your kids, here's the basic breakdown.

Step 1: Prep the Cup

Using a standard party cup and a small screwdriver or scissor tip, punch a small hole at the base of the cup. Grab bakers twine, string or ribbon and feed it through the hole. Tie a knot at the end large enough to stop the string from slipping back through the hole (use tape to secure it if you accidentally cut your hole too large).

Step 2: Add Some String Bling

Give yourself about 18" of string above the cup and then cut the line. Print the FREE printable from my shop found here and cut out the circles. I like to use a 2" circle punch but scissors work too. Use hot glue or double-stick tape to adhere them to the string above the cup. Be sure to place 'to you!' closest to the cup, 'birthday' in the middle, and 'happy' at the top.

Step 3: Stuff the Cup

Using a stool, grab the top of the string (opposite the cup) and tape it securely a few inches above the inside of the bedroom door. Stuff your cup with colorful confetti, curled ribbons, pom-poms or wrapping paper scraps. Gently tuck the string and 2" circles inside.

Step 4: Set the Trap

Place a small bit of tricky tack, gum or double-stick tape on the bottom rim of the cup. Open the door slightly and place the filled up onto the top of the door. Open the door slightly so you can squeeze out (don't worry, the tricky tack will hold the cup upright). Close the door gently behind you so the cup is resting against the door jamb.

Step 5: Watch it Rain

This is the best part of course. When your kids open the door in the morning, the string will stay taped to the wall but the cup will pull away from the tricky tack and dump directly under the threshold...coating your kiddo with a lovely sprinkling of birthday love...and making you look like a hero in the process. You gotta love a great mom hack, right?!
